What is Self-Initiation?

With the rise of Hinduphobia, many seekers are beginning to ask an important question: how does one walk the spiritual path safely?

One answer is... self-initiation.

The Alternate Path

Self-initiation is not a modern invention. It is an authentic Hindu path rooted in the Sri Vidya tradition.

Typically, most mantras require Deeksha (initiation) from a guru. Naturally, this draws many seekers towards living gurus and spiritual institutions.

Self-initiation offers an alternate path.

It means initiating yourself into a mantra and placing your spiritual growth directly in the hands of the Divine and the ancient sages.

Think of it this way:

The former is received from another. The other is sustained through your own effort.

Is It Scriptural?

Naturally, this raises another question: Do the scriptures actually approve of self-initiation?

Yes. The scriptures not only recognize the practice but also sanction it.

For example, the renowned scripture Mantra Maharnava states:

Chanting a mantra in a temple —
particularly a Shiva temple —
during a solar or lunar eclipse is
considered self-initiation into that mantra.

In other words, self-initiation is not an invention. It is dharmic. It is scriptural. It is personal. And above all, it is safe.

For those who can read Sanskrit or Hindi, I have included the relevant references.

The No-Human-Guru Approach

Self-initiation is what I call the No-Human-Guru Approach.

Rather than depending on living gurus or spiritual institutions, we turn towards the Guru Tattva — the latent teacher within. It is through this inner guide that we connect to the Divine.

This is not a rejection of the Guru Tradition.

Far from it.

We continue to revere the awakened gurus of the past. Great beings — such as Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, Sri Sarada Devi, Ramana Maharishi, and Neem Karoli Baba — who remain worthy of reverence and devotion.

The difference is that our dependence shifts away from living human authorities and towards the Divine itself.

A Safety Movement

Self-Initiation is a safety awareness campaign — a part of the Bridges Movement. Its purpose is simple: to protect seekers and address one of the root causes of Hinduphobia.

Here, there are no gurus or groupism.
There is no pressure to belong.
Only the seeker and the Divine.

If this vision resonates with you, all you need to do is follow a simple self-initiation process.

And then, place your trust in the Divine.

Love,
Suvrata Nirupa Sri
